Here are the answers to the quiz to test your knowledge of the world's languages.

1. How many distinct languages (not dialects) are spoken in the world today?

   c. 6,800+     

Linguists have counted at least 6,912 distinct languages. This number is recently being revised and is now closer to 7000 languages. You can search for them at www.ethnologue.com.

What is the most commonly spoken language in the world (as a first language)?

         c. Mandarin         

Mandarin has the most number or speakers in the world, however English is probably the most influential language. English is used for trade and technology in many countries around the world.

What is the most common language learned as a second language?

a. English    

English is the most common second language in the world.


4.   
Which region has the greatest number of living language  (i.e., currently spoken)?

     And the least?                              

 d. Asia: Europe

Asia has the greatest number of languages; Europe has the least.


5.   
What  percent of the world's living languages have a translation of the entire Bible (Old Testament and New Testament)?

a. 6 %           


Only 6%, or 426 of the total 6,912 of the worlds languages has an entire Bible.

Another 1,115 languages have a New Testament and another 862 Language groups have at least one book of the Bible The pie chart has some older statistics but gives a good representation of the overall status of Bible translation.
